The collision was reported shortly after 8 a.m. in the 2400 block of E. 17th Street, near the 55 Freeway.

Investigators believe the driver of the sedan exited the southbound 55 onto 17th Street at a high rate of speed, according to a Santa Ana police statement.

The sedan collided with a cement truck that was stopped in a left turn lane on westbound 17th, police said.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while a passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition. It wasn’t clear if the cement truck driver was injured.
